The reason that we go to school for so many years is that we're trying to prepare ourselves for the workplace. While you might not use a whole lot of biology or physics while working at an Alberta franchise or in an accounting office, there are certainly some skills that you will require no matter what industry you're in. But, if you're really going to get a feel for what it's like to put in an honest day's work than you're eventually going to get out of the classroom. One of a child's first experiences seeing what work is really like is usually when they shadow one of their parents at Take Your Kids to Work Day.
There are many benefits to this program. The first is that they get to see what their parents do when their going off to work with brink industry packaging machines or in a doctor's office. They might respect you a little more at the end of the day when they see all of the responsibilities you have or could give you an extra hand at home when they come back as tired as you at the end of the day. This is a chance for them to better understand the sort of life you lead. This can do a lot for your relationship in the future.
The other great thing about this experience is that it could get them started on thinking about what they would like to do for a living. If you're designing motivational posters for an ad agency than they might start to see how someone can use a creative mind in the workplace. Or, they might not have a whole lot of fun following you around for the day and decide that working on team building cohesion in a large corporation is just not for them. Ask your kids what they liked about the day and what they hated.
Some larger companies will have things for the kids to do all day so that they're not slowing down productivity too much. If this is the case, you might need to tell them a little but more about what you do specifically for that Ottawa home security company or law firm. Try to make sure that they're spending at least a little time with you throughout the day. They are going to get the most out of it if they can see what an average day is like rather than just doing their own thing designed for students. This could be something great to get them started on the right track, whether they're attending the program as a ten year old or someone who's going to be applying for colleges in a couple of years.
